Roof Load Limits
Many cars can carry a rooftop tent — check your car manual and confirm the dynamic roof load (driving).
Dynamic vs static load
Use the dynamic roof load (driving) for safety checks. The static roof load (parked) is typically 3x to 4x higher, but you should never exceed it.
| Limit | When it applies | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic roof load (driving) | While driving | Bars, tent, and roof gear |
| Static roof load (parked) | While parked | People, bedding, and tent |
Focus on dynamic. Static is usually not the issue because some larger tents use a side support pole.
Simple 3-step check
- Check dynamic limit — Find it in your car manual.
- Add weights — Tent + roof gear total.
- Compare & confirm — Must be under the dynamic roof load (driving), then confirm with the owner.

Approximate ranges by car type
These ranges are approximate only. Your car manual is the source of truth — always use the figure printed for your exact model and year.
| Car type | Examples | Dynamic | Static (approx. ×3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| City car | 208, Polo, Clio | 50–70 kg | 150–210 kg |
| Compact hatchback | Golf, Focus | 60–75 kg | 180–225 kg |
| Sedan | A4, Camry | 75–100 kg | 225–300 kg |
| Compact SUV | Qashqai, RAV4 | 75–100 kg | 225–300 kg |
| Mid / large SUV | Defender, X5 | 100–150 kg | 300–450 kg |
| Estate / Wagon | Passat, Octavia | 75–100 kg | 225–300 kg |
| Van / MPV | Sharan, Touran | 100–150 kg | 300–450 kg |
| Pickup | Hilux, Ranger | 100–150 kg | 300–450 kg |
| Electric cars (EVs) | Model 3, ID.4 | 50–75 kg | 150–225 kg |
Compare total weight to dynamic roof load
Add the items below and compare the total to your vehicle’s dynamic roof load.
| Item | Typical weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rooftop tent | 40–80 kg | Check the listing or spec sheet |
| Extra gear on roof | 5–20 kg | Awnings, boxes, or accessories |
| Total | Sum of above | Must be under dynamic limit |
Some large rooftop tents open to the side and use a ground support pole, which helps reduce roof load. Always confirm compatibility with the owner — they will know.

Many cars can work
Rooftop tents work on many cars — from hatchbacks to SUVs — when the dynamic load and bars check out.
Who is responsible
Compatibility is between you and the owner. Roofwander is not responsible for whether your car, roof bars, or load limits fit a tent.
We are happy to answer questions, but the final check and agreement stay with the customer and the owner.
