Roof Load Limits Guide
Most tents fit most cars, but you must check your car manual and confirm the Dynamic roof load (driving) before you book.
Car type ranges: dynamic vs static load (×3)
City car
208, Polo, Clio
Dynamic: 50–70 kg
Static: 150–210 kg
Compact hatchback
Golf, Focus
Dynamic: 60–75 kg
Static: 180–225 kg
Sedan
A4, Camry
Dynamic: 75–100 kg
Static: 225–300 kg
Compact SUV
Qashqai, RAV4
Dynamic: 75–100 kg
Static: 225–300 kg
Mid / large SUV
Defender, X5
Dynamic: 100–150 kg
Static: 300–450 kg
Estate / Wagon
Passat, Octavia
Dynamic: 75–100 kg
Static: 225–300 kg
Van / MPV
Sharan, Touran
Dynamic: 100–150 kg
Static: 300–450 kg
Pickup
Hilux, Ranger
Dynamic: 100–150 kg
Static: 300–450 kg
Electric cars (EVs)
Model 3, ID.4
Dynamic: 50–75 kg
Static: 150–225 kg
Focus on dynamic. Static is usually not the issue because some larger tents use a side support pole.
Simple 3-step check
- Check dynamic limit: Find it in your car manual.
- Add weights: Tent + roof gear total.
- Compare & confirm: Must be under the Dynamic roof load (driving), then confirm with the owner.
Check your limit (no car manual?)
Copy and paste this into an AI chatbot:
"I have a [brand] [model] [year]. What is the dynamic roof load, and is a [tent weight] kg rooftop tent safe with roof bars?"
Dynamic vs static load
Use the Dynamic roof load (driving) for safety checks. The Static roof load (parked) is typically 3x to 4x higher, but you should never exceed it.
| Limit | When it applies | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic roof load (driving) | While driving | Bars, tent, and roof gear |
| Static roof load (parked) | While parked | People, bedding, and tent |
Compare total weight to dynamic roof load
Add the items below and compare the total to your vehicle's dynamic roof load.
| Item | Typical weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rooftop tent | 40-80 kg | Check the listing or spec sheet |
| Extra gear on roof | 5-20 kg | Awnings, boxes, or accessories |
| Total | Sum of above | Must be under dynamic limit |
Some large rooftop tents open to the side and use a ground support pole, which helps reduce roof load. Always confirm compatibility with the owner; they will know.
