Renting Out Your Rooftop Tent

Most problems at pickup come from a lack of communication beforehand. Running through these 4 checks prevents almost all mounting and compatibility issues.

1. Confirm the Renter Has Roof Bars

  • Bars are installed and load-rated for a rooftop tent
  • Bar width matches your tent's mounting rail spacing
  • If no bars yet, share the Roof Bars & Compatibility guide before they buy

2. Ask for the Vehicle Details

Collect before confirming: make, model, year, roof type (flush rails / fixed points / bare roof / panoramic). Always verify yourself — a wrong assumption by the renter means a failed install on the day.

3. Validate Roof Load Compatibility

Check the vehicle's dynamic roof load (car manual), bar load rating, and your tent weight. The effective limit is always the lowest of the three.

4. The Most Common Problem: Not Enough Clearance

Even with the right car and the right bars, mounting can fail if the bars sit too close to the roof. There is not enough room to insert and tighten the hardware underneath.

Signs of a clearance problem:

  • Mounting bolt cannot be inserted from below
  • Nut is impossible to reach with hands or tools
  • Tent base touches the roof when placed on bars

The Fix: Use U-Shape Clamps and Spacers

U-shape clamp for tight clearance

U-shape clamp
Nuts accessible from the side. Easier to reach in tight spaces.

Straight plate clamp

Straight plate clamp
Works well with higher bars. Harder to reach when clearance is limited.

Spacers for extra clearance

Spacers
Add height between tent base and bars. Restore hand access instantly.

Short and long bolt sizes

Bolt length
Short bolts for tight spaces. Longer bolts when clearance allows.

As an owner, keep this kit ready: U-shape clamps, a set of spacers, and short and long bolt variants. This covers the vast majority of roof bar geometries without special modifications.

Pre-Rental Checklist

Run through this before confirming every booking:

  • Renter has load-rated roof bars installed
  • Bar width matches tent mounting rail spacing
  • Vehicle dynamic roof load confirmed (car manual)
  • Roof bar load rating confirmed
  • Combined weight (tent + bars) is within vehicle limit
  • U-shape clamps available in your kit
  • Spacers available if clearance is uncertain
  • Short and long bolt variants packed
