How to Prevent Condensation in a Rooftop Tent

A practical guide to stopping condensation in a rooftop tent: ventilation, gear management, anti-condensation mats, dehumidifiers, and more.

What Is Condensation and Why Does It Happen?

Condensation forms when warm, moist air meets a cold surface, turning water vapour into liquid. In a rooftop tent, this is especially common in autumn and winter, when tent walls are colder.

Moisture in the air comes from:

  • Breathing: each person exhales up to 1 litre of water vapour per night
  • Wet gear: clothes, towels, and boots evaporate slowly overnight
  • Natural humidity: especially near lakes, rivers, or forests

Without action, condensation can make the tent feel like it is leaking and lead to mould over time.

Details on Each Method

1. Keep Windows Partially Open

Airflow is the most effective condensation control. Even a small gap lets moist air escape before it reaches the tent walls. Balance ventilation with warmth: fully open in mild weather, slightly cracked in cold.

2. Leave Wet Gear in Your Car

Boots, towels, and damp clothes release moisture all night. Keep them in the car or awning, not in the sleeping area.

3. Use a Fan

A small USB or battery fan increases airflow significantly. Pair with a portable power station. Position it to push air toward vents.

4. Anti-Condensation Mat

Place one under your mattress. It creates a barrier against moisture build-up beneath the sleeping surface and improves under-mattress ventilation.

5. Dehumidifier Packs or Silica Gel Bags

These absorb airborne moisture passively. Leave them in the tent when pitched. Silica gel bags can be reactivated by heating, so no electricity is needed.

6. Small Electric Dehumidifier

Even a compact model connected to a portable power station can reduce humidity levels noticeably overnight.

7. Diesel or Propane Heater

Pumps warm, dry air into the tent, reducing humidity and warming surfaces so condensation is less likely to form. Keep a window slightly open for safety and airflow.

8. Avoid Humid Locations

Camping near lakes, rivers, or marshes increases ambient humidity significantly. Where possible, choose drier, elevated ground.

9. Dry Pets Before They Enter

Pet fur holds moisture. Use a towel or dry them before they sleep inside the tent.

10. Face Windows Into the Wind

Natural wind helps push moist air out. Orient tent openings toward the prevailing wind direction when setting up.

What to Do If Condensation Has Already Built Up

Step 1: Air it out immediately. Open all windows and doors as soon as you wake. Set up in a dry breeze if possible.

Step 2: Wipe down surfaces. Use a microfibre towel to wipe interior walls and the underside of the mattress.

Step 3: Remove damp gear. Wet items extend the drying time and add new moisture.

Step 4: Use dehumidifier packs while airing to speed up moisture absorption.

Step 5: If mould appears, mix 100ml Milton Sterilising Fluid with 1000ml water, wipe on mould, leave 30 minutes, rinse with cold water. Reproof fabric after treatment.

Summary

Condensation is manageable with simple habits: ventilate, keep wet gear outside, and use an anti-condensation mat as a baseline. Add dehumidifier packs or a fan for colder or more humid conditions. A diesel heater is the most effective solution for winter camping.
