Rooftop Tent Rental Checklist

Ready to rent a rooftop tent? Use this checklist to make sure your car, rack, setup, and trip plan are good to go. It also covers what to confirm with the owner before you book.

Before you book

Vehicle & rack compatibility

  • Check your car’s dynamic roof load (while driving) and static load (when parked) in the owner’s manual.
  • Confirm your roof type (bare roof, fixed points, flush rails, raised rails) and that you have crossbars rated for the total load (tent + bars + accessories).
  • Ask the owner for the tent’s weight and recommended bar spread; ensure you have enough height clearance (garages, barriers).

Tent fit & capacity

  • Choose a size that fits your group and car. Larger tents add wind resistance and can affect fuel use.
  • Make sure the ladder length works for your vehicle height.

Policies, deposit & insurance**

Logistics

  • Confirm pickup/return times and location, and whether the tent can stay mounted between nights.
  • Ask about included tools/hardware (keys for bars, torque tool, mounting bolts) and any extras (annex, awning, lights).

48 hours before pickup

  • Message the owner to reconfirm time, address, parking access, and a phone number.
  • Check the weather; ask for wind/rain tips specific to the tent model.
  • Bring: photo ID matching the booking, straps/soft cloths for protection if advised.

Pickup & installation

  • Do a walk-around with photos (roof, bars, tent) before mounting.
  • Install with two people. Follow the owner’s instructions for bar spacing and torque; test open/close, ladder angle, and door zips.
  • Verify cover is secured, lights/plate are visible, and nothing moves at highway speed. Ask for the maker’s speed guidance (many recommend an upper limit).

On the road

  • Daily quick check: cover straps, bolts, ladder feet, and any loose fabric.
  • In strong wind/heavy rain: park with the hinge upwind if possible; close the tent if conditions worsen.
  • Air the tent to reduce condensation; keep the rainfly tensioned.

Return day

  • Dry and brush off the tent; remove sand/mud. Don’t pack wet if you can avoid it.
  • Close and secure the cover; return all hardware/extras.
  • Do a joint final inspection with photos. If there’s damage, complete the deposit claim and email deposit@roofwander.com (subject: “Deposit Claim – [Order ID]”).
